Global Usage Rule Examples
To assist you in developing usage rules, this section includes spreadsheets for several use cases that you can review or duplicate for practice before building your own usage rules (refer to Spreadsheet Template for Global Usage Rules). Global usage rules can make each of the following examples, which normally would be labor-intensive to record and calculate, quick and accurate to process events.
The following use cases have example spreadsheets included:
-
Usage Rule Example for Dog Walker — A dog walking business where the usage rule calculates the cost of the services based on the length of the walk, if the dog owner is a regular customer, if there is more than one dog, etc. This example uses values from multiple data value columns in the lookup table.
-
Usage Rule Example for Internet Provider — Usage rules and usage lookup tables for an internet provider that uses tiered rating.
-
Usage Rule Example for Legal Firm — A legal firm that needs usage rules to calculate billable hours, the cost of which varies depending on the lawyer performing the work and the type of work being performed.
-
Usage Rule Example for Movie Rental Business — A movie rental business (renting either DVDs or renting access to a movie over the Internet) that needs usage rules to calculate the amount owed for movie rentals based on type of movie (such as New Release, Popular, or Classic), the length of time, and day of week the movie is being rented.
